Coherent breathing and HRV

Coherent breathing and HRV: why slow breathing feels calming

Coherent breathing is a slow, regular breathing pattern often practiced around five to six breaths per minute. At that pace, breathing can feel smoother and more rhythmic, which many people experience as calming.

What HRV means

Heart rate variability, or HRV, describes the small changes in time between heartbeats. Higher HRV is often associated with better recovery and adaptability, although it should be interpreted carefully and not treated as a diagnosis.

A simple coherent breathing protocol

  1. Set a timer for 3 to 5 minutes.
  2. Inhale gently for 5 seconds.
  3. Exhale gently for 5 seconds.
  4. Keep shoulders relaxed and breathe through the nose if comfortable.

Why guidance helps

Counting seconds can become distracting. Onezen gives you a clean visual rhythm with optional sound and haptic cues, so the practice feels more natural and repeatable.

When to practice

Try coherent breathing in the morning, before an important task or as part of an evening routine. Consistency matters more than intensity.
